a rabies vaccine in a pup this young is pointless. the dog should be at least 3-4 months for it's immune system to properly react to a rabies vaccine. but not under 3 months of age.

for you contact your human dr. they will be able to direct you to what you need to do or if you should worry.

typically puppies of this age do not have rabies, but it is not unheard of. but a puppy this young more than likely would have died from rabies before any contagious symptoms were present.

but to be on the safe side it's best to check with human medical personel.

Regardless of what you stated, you MUST call your vet. I do NOT know of any vet that would give the Rabies vaccine to a 3 month old puppy.

The depth of the bit is NOT relevant... if the dog broke the skin, the risk is there. Amount or volume is irrelevant. Breaking the skin is what allows germs to enter your body.

FIRST - call your vet and ask your vet...
If the dog has not had it's rabies shot, which I doubt it has had, then... CALL YOUR DOCTOR and ask YOUR DOCTOR...

This question can NOT be properly answered by anyone here at Yahoo because it is your LIFE that is at risk.

Ask your doctor or local health department for recommendations. Puppies only require one shot of rabies vaccine the first year, then again in one year, then every three years after that so his vaccine is up to date. It's also unlikely that this dog has been exposed to the rabies virus. You will not get rabies from the vaccine in the dog's system as it is a killed virus vaccine.

ETA: Many vets will give puppies the rabies vaccine at 3 months, but no earlier than that. I've attached the vaccination schedule of a well respected practice so you can see for fact what a normal vaccine schedule is.

You will be fine. The worst thing that will happen is a small bacterial infection... nothing that Polysporin can't fix.

Your chances of contracting rabies from this pup is EXTREMELY rare. You're more likely to get hit by an airplane.

Also, the Rabies vaccine for humans is quite costly and not covered by extended health - if you're Canadian.

ADD: NEDRA, most vets give dogs the Rabies vaccine by 16 wks of age. This is common practice.

You should be fine since it wasn't a huge gash, but since it broke the skin I might get a shot just in case.

Speak to a doctor or possibly a vet, they'll know better.
Dog bites commonly need antibiotics so as to not get infected at least though.
